Healthcare Advance Directives

One of the most important decisions you can make — both for yourself and for your loved ones — is what you desire to do if you become seriously injured or ill, even terminally so. What level of care do you want, when do you want care withheld, and who is to make those decisions for you? Barry believes that such decisions are crucial for you and for your loved ones, should be made with detail sufficient to ensure that your wishes are carried out, and after much thought and if appropriate discussion with your loved ones as to your wishes.

In Florida, a Healthcare Advance Directive is the term used for a document that gives instructions about your healthcare and appoints someone to make medical treatment decisions for you if you cannot make them for yourself. Living Wills and Durable Powers of Attorney for Healthcare are both types of Healthcare Advance Directives.

A Living Will is a document in which you state your wishes about life-sustaining medical treatment if you are terminally ill, permanently unconscious, or in the end-stage of a fatal illness. Situations you may find yourself in, and which should be addressed in detail in a Living Will, include what to do if:

  • You are in a coma or a persistent vegetative state.
  • You are near death and in a coma and have a small but uncertain chance of regaining higher mental functions, and a greater chance of surviving with permanent mental and physical disability.
  • You have terminal illness with weeks to live.
  • You have brain damage or a brain disease that cannot be reversed and that makes you unable to think or have feelings, such as the final stages of Alzheimer's disease.
  • You are in your current state of health.

These are questions which we must all face. Making sure your Healthcare Advance Directive is thorough in answering these important healthcare questions may be the greatest gift you can give to yourself and to your loved ones. We at Fuller & Associates have helped clients face such questions, and answer them with care and compassion, for years. We believe it is a high calling.

At Fuller & Associates, we utilize a thorough Healthcare Advance Directive, which we combine with a Living Will, so that all of your medical documents are contained in one comprehensive document. Our document is very similar to those suggested by the leading healthcare institutions and the American Medical Association, which are extremely comprehensive and designed to work for you for the rest of your life. We encourage you to take time to determine what you desire, and to discuss your choices with your family and loved ones.
